"Seijin-No-Hi" Coming of Age in Japan

Today is a very special day in Japan. We celebrate "coming of age day", that is when Okinawan and Japanese turn 20 years old. They are considered adults now and everyone celebrates on the same day. Both guys and gals put on special kimonos and celebrate first at the city community center and then at private dinners and parties. The girls look so beautiful in their bright Kimonos! For many of the gals their day began way before dawn starting at the hair salons. These kimonos take at least a 1/2 hour to put on, and can cost easily up to $10,000 American dollars, but many families rent them for about $1,000.00 dollars. It is a real festive day, and also a National Holiday. We took these pictures after lunch on the way back home from church.
